This was a project where we were assigned to choose any decade and location and create 4 "artifacts", write a choose Your own adventure story and, read a book all about your decade and location. When we completed all of this we had to present everything we created to the class. Below You can find a button that when clicked will take you to a google slides document that has all of our work for this project on it.
Project Reflection
I think the main thing that I took in was some of the bigger similarities of this time and place comparing the time and place that I know. I think that after all the research that especially on the wars and protesting it kinda makes me feel like history is repeating itself in a way. Seeing the types of things that were going on during this time is not exactly the same but I feel like there are a lot of similarities. Just researching and reading about these past events reminds me of the quote “ those who cannot remember the past and condemned to repeat it”. Based on a lot of recent political events revolving around our involvement with other nations and all the other protests against guns it looks similar to things that were happening back in the 1960’s
The biggest thing that stood out to me that is still kinda the same today is how people take a stand and use their voice to protest things that they believe are wrong. I don't know much about the effects that protesting can have but from things that I have heard and seen in recent school shooting related protests, it seems that protests similar to those that were going on during the Vietnam war don't do much. I know that this isn't always the case but I feel like it's really interesting that this same method that has a history of not being super effective is still so popular more importantly that something new and more effective hasn't started. I wish that after having this long history of protesting this way not working that we would have found another way that would actually get something done. I think this also shows how some things haven't changed.
My personal favorite would have been the news broadcast that Diego and I created. When I first saw the list of artifact choices Diego and I both knew we wanted to do that because of our history of making funny videos together. I also thought that this could be a good challenge because it can be really hard to put a video together especially with some of the ideas we had for our race to space segment. Becuase we actually wanted to try to recreate the landing and other space things I thought that it would be something that would be fun to watch and still be able to show what kind of things were going on during this decade.
I easily learned most about the social and cultural aspects of the south in the 1960’s. I think this also had to do with the information that we decided to involve in our artifacts but there were also a lot of social changes going on during this time and some of these different events molded the US in a very big way.
I would have done a different artifact in place of the timeline that we did. I feel that the way that it turned out wasn't what we were hoping for and was a little long and could have been made in a way that would have kept the audience way more interested.
What book did you read as a group? Provide a brief synopsis and briefly describe how this book relates to your decade/location.
The book we read was Wise Guys by Nicholas Pileggi. This book is based on a true story which starts in new york and is about a young boy named Henry Hill. This book basically tells the story of Henry's life being involved in the Italian mafia. When he was 11 he started working for the mafia selling cigarettes but slowly worked his way up the chain of power. This book took place in a lot of different places throughout the US including Florida, New York and, Los Angeles.

Potluck Reflection
After completing the project we had a pot luck where we had to bring a food that connected to the book we read or our decade or location. The food that I brought was Nutella and bread. Nutella was actually made in the 1940's but it was originally made by an Italian baker which connects to our book because of the main characters connection with the Italian mob. Spreading Nutella on bread quickly became a popular thing to do and was a great snack.
